Visit of the students of the Warsaw University of Technology

On 7th April 2017 the students interested in the application of renewable sources of energy in practice came to the  Research Centre of PAN KEZO - the Polish Academy of Sciences of Energy Conversion and Renewable Sources. Below there is a note made by them: 

On 07.04.2017 r. as the members of the Student Scientific Circle of Nonconventional Power Generation at the Warsaw University of Technology we had an opportunity to visit the Research Centre of PAN: Energy Conversion and Renewable Sources in Jabłonna. The Centre  is the most modern in Poland and one of the most modern complex of laboratories in Europe, which deal with application of renewable energy.

The scientific and research infrastructure of the Centre consists of five laboratories: Laboratory of Solar Technologies, Laboratory of Microturbines in Cogeneration Systems, Laboratory of Wind Energy Station, Laboratory of Energy Safety Engineering, Integrated plus Energy Laboratory. During the trip we could enter  most of them.

In the beginning of the visit we looked at the thermal diagram of the Centre and got to know that it is managed with the use of Building Management System - BMS and the software that serves the purpose of looking for optimal energy balance for various Renewable Energy Sources devices operating in one power grid. The Centre is self-efficient in terms of heat and electrical power. After a short introduction we went on to visit the laboratories. 

In the Laboratory of Solar Technologies we could see, among others, solar panels of different types and devices for testing them, a work station to test cooling, air-conditioning systems,  heat pumps and the most modern solar simulator in Poland generating radiation identical to the natural solar spectrum.

In the Laboratory of Microturbines in Cogeneration Systems we could see, among others, high-temperature and low-temperature heat stores or cooling stores, phase-transition stores, a prototype of ORC microturbines in cogeneration systems, a work station to test microturbines, a balancer for rotators. 

Undoubtedly, one of the most interesting systems was an aerodynamic tunnel of the cross-section of 2x2 m for testing small wind turbines.

In other laboratories we paid our attention to the following devices: a sputter to generate thin layers made of metal on objects or a 3D printer for metal.

Outside the building we could observe photovoltaic panels installed on the balcony railings, solar collectors standing on the roof of the building, solar panels with a follow-up system and wind turbines. 

We got to know that the Centre is  open to students who want to conduct tests in the scope of renewable sources. A lot of us will take advantage of this offer when we start writing our diploma thesis.
